How should I prepare for OB and Peds next semester?

Nursing Students Student Assist

3rd semester is supposed to be the worst. Everyone I've talked to who is a year ahead has told me about how they stopped caring about their GPA because A students start getting C's and D's... I'm an A student so I'm worried.

What are some basic things I can look at over the summer to prepare for this class? Stuff like drugs, procedures, etc. I always email professors this question over the summer but they never get back to me.

Thanks!

I wonder why it's considered the worst?

I am in Psych Nursing this summer and will do OB in the Fall and Peds in the Winter.

You could read up on some common pregnancy complications(premature labor, toxemia, Pregnancy Induced Hypertension, Gestational Diabetes, Type I/II Diabetes & Pregnancy--usually high risk in my experience, ummm low amniotic fluid, twin to twin transfusion syndrome(not even sure if this will be covered but it can and does happen), DIC/hemorrhage during delivery, Meconium aspiration, ummmm gosh Im not sure what else...

I actually anticipate OB and Peds going well for me...I've had 4 complicated pregnancies, and OB is definitely somewhere I am comfortable.

I just finished my 3rd quarter and we covered F&E, Cardiac, GI, Prenatal, and OB. I am an A student and my GPA only dropped to a 3.5. I can say I was burnt out this quarter. Mainly because I have the summer off though and couldn't wait to finish! :)

We didn't cover many drugs in OB, but we only covered the basics and not high risk. Look up some general rules of thumb about oxytocin and prostaglandinds. Also, pain control such as breathing techniques or epidurals. We also covered stages of labor, basic fetal monitoring, cultural considerations, and post-partum care.

Do you have a curriculum that you can look over your reading assignments before hand? You could always read through your text book for a head start.

Thank you! 3rd semester is bad because there is just way too much stuff crammed into it. That's why at my school 4 yr BSN program just became 4.5 yr. They had to stretch it out another semester because too many people lose their minds towards the end.

Oh how funny I am in a BSN program and our third semester is supposedly the hardest as well. I hope so becuase I just completed it last semester. We had med-surg 2, OB, and Psych...It was definately chaotic and busy but OB and psych were super easy. I have ped's this fall which is why I clicked on this thread and I have heard it is a hard one :(

I just finished OB/PEDS..the reason why this happens is burn out more than anything else...not subject matter...look over OB n PEDs take some OB n PEds test and review NCLEX style questions..aside from that...try and keep ur sanity...which is the hardest thing to do in nursing school..

there are way to many keeners lurking these boards. Enjoy your summer and relax. Save your stressing till the exam. That has become my motto since joining nursing. I used to have a 4.2 and nursing has dragged me down to a 3.93:( (partly because a+'s don't exist in nursing, while they are in every other faculty at my school)

Anyways, school sucks and try to enjoy yourself while you don't have it.
