Dear Nurse Beth,

I would like to get my PHN certificate. I am a California resident. I did the RN to BSN program with UTA that included public health nursing units, but no clinical hours. How do I get the required 90 hours of supervised public health nursing clinical hours?

Dear Wants Public Health Certificate (PHN),

To obtain 90 hours of public health clinical hours in California to apply for the PHN certificate, you can consider the following steps:

  • Some schools offer the required coursework. Cal State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) may still provide this program. To apply, you will need a Letter of Deficiency from the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). You will most likely be required to provide your own preceptor.
  • If CSUDH no longer offers the program, they may be able to refer you to another school.
  • Local Health Departments. Reach out to your local health departments or public health agencies. Many health departments offer opportunities for public health clinical hours to registered nurses. You can inquire about potential openings or internships.
  • Nonprofit Organizations. Some nonprofit organizations focused on public health may offer clinical opportunities for RNs. These organizations often work on public health initiatives, and your involvement could count toward your required clinical hours.
  • Community Clinics: Community health clinics often provide public health services and may have opportunities for nurses to gain clinical experience in public health
  • Professional Associations. Check with nursing associations in California, such as the California Nurses Association (CNA), for resources or information on public health clinical opportunities.
  • Contact the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). The California BRN may guide you to where you can obtain the required clinical hours. They can offer specific information regarding the process and any updates to the requirements.

Apply and Fulfill the Requirements. Once you identify a suitable clinical opportunity, apply and ensure you meet the requirements set by the facility or organization. Keep detailed records of your clinical hours and tasks performed.

Before starting your clinical hours, make sure you understand the specific requirements set by the California Board of Registered Nursing for PHN certification. It's essential to ensure that your clinical experience aligns with their guidelines to meet the certification requirements successfully.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
