How do I become a Postpartum Nurse?

Help!! I was an RN at a convalescent hospital for 14 months right out of nursing school because that was the only job available at that time. I haven't worked in almost 2 years due to illness but have now recovered. I desperately want to get my foot in the door to postpartum/ L&D nursing. I loved it during nursing school and I just know that is where my heart is. But, I have no idea where to start, how to get some experience. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Kara,

I've been a post partum nurse for the last 12 years and I love it. One way to get your foot in the door is to talk to the nurse manager of the post partum or L&D unit you're interested in working at. Many hospitals will provide on the job training for these specialties. Needless to say, I'd show a lot of enthusiasm and be prepared to answer questions like why this specialty area interests you. Ask the nurse manager what might be the best resource materials to use to help bring you up to date in these areas. Best of luck!

You could get in the door of the hospital you want then work your way to that unit. Get some med/surg nursing under you and get to know the staff, then make your move. May start with an On-call position while you work your regular unit then wait for a part time or full time slot to open.

Some hospitals offer residencies/internships for new grads or nurses looking to change specialties. These are great ways to learn and get oriented. Be persistent! Don't be afraid to call HR departments and ask about opportunities.
