hello all...

i'm a career changer and looking into a 1yr bsn program to become a rn (in california...my hometown). how hard is it to land your first job as a rn? i heard it's really hard. what do you guys think? i hear most people are looking for experienced nurses and the new grads are left out in the cold...

You are right there, no one is beating down those doors, women are the hardest to work with, in my prison we have 654 inmate right now 93 of them women................ i would take care of all of the other inmates if i didnt have to step foot in the female unit!!! hahaha

Do you feel safe working in a prison? What kind of security measures are taken and do you have to go through special training? I'm a new grad having a hard time finding a job and considered working in a prison, but was worried about safety.

you say you're only interested in several areas of nursing. well as a new grad, you get in where you fit in, and after you have a couple of years experience under your belt, you can move on to the dept of your dreams.:heartbeat

and who knows, you may even change your mind once you start school and experience different areas of nursing. it's hard to know for sure what you want to do if you don't have any any experience doing it.

i have family in cleveland, and i applied for a few jobs there. nothing panned out. one hospital rejected me because of my lack of phlebotomy skills.

Was that in CA? I'm pretty much only interested in living in CA. I know new grads who were looking to move to SF had it pretty hard. But then again, I'm sure it's hard to get ANY job in SF. I'm from Orange County so I'm interested in working there, San Diego or LA. Anyone have any nursing, job-info about those parts of CA? Thanks.

Southern Calif, the central valley and basically any area other than the greater Sacramento and Bay areas are not hard to find new grad positions in. That is because the Sac/SF areas pay a lot better than most anywhere else and so the jobs are very competitive to get as a new grad. Good luck, you shouldn't have a problem!
