This being my first travel assignment, I am thinking of all of these things that I hadn't thought of!
How do you get to work?? Is there a shuttle bus, do you rent a car, ride a bike/scooter or hitchhike??
Hmmmm....I shoulda thought of this before!!!!

I drove my car from Indiana to NC. When this current assignment is done, I will be driving to Seattle from Indiana....
Deep sigh... not looking forward to it, but my company won't pay for a car for me. Oh well.

I drive my own truck. I actually enjoy the cross country drives, planning an extra day or so into the trip so I can stop along the way with no pressure to hurry. I do know that some travelers in metro areas will use public transportation.

I drove my own car. I drove from Tennessee to San Francisco, then to San Diego, then to Seattle, then to Laguna Hills, and soon back to Seattle. The scenery is nice. The ride can get a bit long and tiresome after a while. Books on CD help and are a nice distraction.
If you work in a large enough city with a great public transportation system (like Seattle or San Francisco) then you won't need your car much. In both of those places I mostly walked or took mass transit. The reason in Seattle and San Francisco was because trying to drive and park my SUV in those cities made me nervous. I even did $2500 worth of damage hitting my car on the cement pole in my parking garage of my apartment in Seattle. So, I didn't really like driving the city streets and parking in major cities.
Now for San Diego and Laguna Hills, I drove my car everywhere. The transit system wasn't the same, and I was always trekking to the beach. I am glad I have my car, but it hasn't been a necessity with all assignments.
Thanks for the responses.
What do you think about getting a rental car? I wondered how expensive it is in california. I am off to research that. I guess if housing is close enough, I could walk..that would be good exercise, right?

A couple of people I worked with in San Francisco did originally rent cars. But, they found out that the daily rental rate was more expensive than actually having a car. So many of them eventually turned their car in and started walking or taking the bus. Granted, this was in San Francisco, and everything is more expensive there than most other places in California. Also, there is a great public transit system there. Some rental companies may give rates for renting in "bulk" days. Plus, check with your travel company. Some have discount rates for travelers with certain companies.
Good luck!

I use my pickup or the Harley out of the back of my fifthwheel toyhauler that I live in. They're relatively cheap to buy and you make a lot more $ as well as always having your home with you.
