How to get a job

Published

I am only in my second semester of nursing school and already I am hearing about how difficult it is to find a job in NYC. I have a year and a half left of nursing school (godwilling). I attend the college of staten island but am willing to work pretty much anywhere within the 5 boroughs. Are there any steps I can take now that would give me a better chance to get hired right out of school? Do I intern at a hospital now? How do I network? My school is not helpful in this regard, please advise.

Thanks

I would highly recommend doing some kind of certification course (i.e. CNA, patient care tech etc.) and trying to get a job in a hospital now, hopefully by the time you finish and pass the NCLEX the market will be better, but regardless I think it will be easier to start working in a hospital now, and hopefully they will take you on as RN once you're licensed. I really regret not doing this myself. I had actually been in a CNA program, but left it because they kept changing the dates of the classes and it was interfering with my nursing school hours and job. Since I was working and my boss was flexible with my schedule to accommodate for school I just figured it wasn't worth it. I had no idea how tough the job market was for nurses. Best of luck!!

Staten Island University Hospitals are part of NS-LIJ, so I'd try and get some sort of employment at either campus. That would hopefully give you some sort of inside track in terms of nursing openings post grad. NS-LIJ is a big system and growing (they just purchased two more hospitals in LI a week or so ago), so if you are willing to travel that could be a good thing.

There seems to be quite allot of physican private practice offices on the Island these days, maybe try finding work there will lead to hospital work as well.

Good luck

thanks for input christine
