How to get hired without any experience??

Published

I am graduating in December and I am on the job hunt...the problem is a lot of places will not hire a new graduate nurse or a nurse without any experience...where do you start??

Long-Term Care...Nursing Homes is the only place willing to hire new grads. I just got hired Thurs. after 2 months of searching! Keep looking online, in newspapers and applying in person at any Nursing Home in your area. Don't give up hope, you have to be persistant. Also, make sure you have an excellent resume and cover letter! Good Luck!:nurse:

Start with the best resume you can make (while still being honest, of course). Make sure that your positive aspects are appropriately highlighted. (volunteer work? job skills acquired through non-nursing jobs? special student experiences that are relevant to the job applying for? leadership in organizations? etc.)

Then start applying -- not just to long-term care facilities -- but to everywhere you would like to work. You might get lucky. My hospital has noticably increased it hiring in the last few months and is planning to hire some new grads in the next few months. So don't assume that you can't get a job.

If your initial applications yield nothing, you might use your "waiting time" to get some experience -- at least some volunteer experience. Get your foot in the door and show them that your are interested and that you are a great worker.

me too

hello. me too. i'm a nursing graduate but not yet registered. i want to have a job wherein i can get any experience while i am studying for my nclex.

is there any institution accepting those graduates without a license? what kind of insti?thank you. :nurse::nurse:

You can get a job in the hospital but it really does take time and patience. Apply to them anyway. I applied for jobs that specifically said "new grads encouraged to apply" but I didn't get called for them. :( However, I kept applying. It really helps to use your contacts. A lot of my new grad friends got their hospital jobs because they knew someone. I don't know about long term care but when I interviewed at a hospital, they asked if I had my license and told me that hospitals are moving toward not hiring RNs without their license because they have to train them as an RN and if they do not pass NCLEX, they have to bump them down to a tech and train them as a tech....too much money invested I guess. Hang in there, it is tough. A good resume and cover really help and volunteer if you can or try to get into a new grad program at the hospital. Some open those up to new grads once a year I think. Good luck to you!

Keep an eye out for New Graduate Internships or Residencies at your hospitals of interest. You can check their websites for this info or call nurse recruitment. If you find that you may have missed the deadline to apply at some places, just wait for the next date to roll around again. That's how I got my job. I hope that everything works out for you!

I've applied to a few places...I am just waiting for some interviews!! Any suggestions as to how to prepare for an interview or what to expect??
