I have been away from nursing for about 3 years now. Previously I worked as a substance abuse and rehabilitation nurse. I quit once I found out I was pregnant and my husband wanted to move us further out in the country. Basically the commute and the overnights became too much for me to handle. Anyways, recently I have been dissatisfied with my job in retail and really want to get back into nursing, but i'm afraid that with the length of time I've been away and all the advancements that have been made in medicine and changes to HIPPA I will be lost. I will have to take my boards again as I did let my license expire (what was I thinking!!!??). I need some guidance on whether i should try to take my boards again, or just let all my hard work as a nurse go. And if I do take my boards again, what should i use to study?

You need to check with whoever issues practice permits.
In my province, if you don't work for three years, you MUST take a refresher course and placement at college to be able to return to the workforce.

I was out of nursing for 13 years due to a back injury. I called a place I saw in the paper to find out where they were located and ended up scheduling an interview. I got the job and it was like I never left. No refresher but I kept up my license and CEUs. Check with your board of nursing. Good luck.
