How to flush a 2way Foley Cather

Published

hi there,

can someone please offer some guidance..

Question 1)

With a 2 way foley urinary catheter, how do you flush the catheter to prevent clots ?

Question 2)

I have encountered a 2 way catheter, 1 limb is for the balloon/air, and the other limb connects to the urinary bag. If i am going to flush the catheter, should i connect the syringe to the rubber part of the limb, or how?

for a double lumen, draw up your soultion (acitic acid and water etc...) You detach the drainage bag from the catheter. I keep sterile as poss. attach the syringe to the cath and instill. There usually is orders, or a facillity protocal. Some say instill and then reattach the drainage bag, some say instill and then take out. That you have to confirm with your facility. I hope this helps. :nurse:

hi there, thanks for that. Another question, how much solution would you instill into the catheter? and it's N/S isnt it?

in my facility we have a solution for foley irrigation, if its not aa. Usually NS. as far as the amount it depends if there is an order for it, Usually about 30 - 40 ml. :nurse:

I use the sample port on the drainage tubing. No need to open the system.
