Welcome to allnurses! :balloons:
I am moving your post to the Travel Nursing forum, since that is the topic of your question. You may want to look around the forum -- there is lots of info, opinions, experiences, etc., already posted and available for your review.
Best wishes for your studies! :)
Im only taking my pre-reqes right now- Im going to enter an accelerated program next year. My mom is a Nurse and has done several travel assignments.Im just wondering how this works. You take an assignment at least 60 miles from your residence?
I know this is not how its supposed to work- but what if you claimed your residence at a mailing address 61 miles away- and took a travel assignment in your home town- can you do this?
Im just curious. Im not trying to cheat the system but Im wondering if people do this. I like the idea of short term assignments and not commiting to one thing.
Please let me know your experience.
thanks
If you are talking of taking an assignment in your home town and claiming a home somewhere else in order to receive tax free housing/tax advantage plans that IS "cheating the system" and illegal to boot and could result in big problems with the IRS if you are ever audited.
There is no law concerning how far from your residence a travel assignment must be aside from the tax issues (which do NOT have a set "mileage" to qualify), but some hospitals have internal policies concerning this and will not hire "travelers" who live within a certain distance from the hospital (presumably to prevent staff from quitting and coming back as travelers). If you claim to live elsewhere you are going to be risking the chance that someone will find out and you could be immediately cancelled from your contract - as well as having to watch everything you say not to "give away" anything.
You are going to need to get at least a year or two minimum of experience as a staff nurse before traveling anyway, so chances are that the local hospitals will already know who you are.
