I was thinking about leaving my current position and finding a new job. How does this work... do I go and find a new job and when I am offered a job then tell my current manager I will be leaving in a few weeks? Won't she have all ready been called as a work reference? That would seem like a rude way to find out your employee is leaving. Am I supposed to tell her I will be leaving soon (without any job offers yet) so that she would be expecting to be called up as a reference?

You can request that your new place not contact your current manager if the relationship is not good. Otherwise it would be considerate to let your current employer know that you're planning on leaving.
