Hi everyone,

I am a new grad (LVN) and I just started working in a nursing home. Since I'm a new grad, I am sooo overwelmed. I 'm trying to soak up everything I being thrown at me. MY plan is to work Med/Surg but I need to get any kind of experience first, that's why I'm working in a nursing home just to gain experieince in something. I don't know anywhere around me who is willing to take a new grad for med surg. Anyways, the 22+ ratio is kind of stressful and I'm just wondering how you Psych nurses like working and doing what you do. I've been thinking about it. Can any of you shed some information on being a psych nurse? Duties, pay, feelings about it, ..... Anything will help me out. Thanks!

I am an LVN psych nurse during the week; also, I work at a nursing home doung weekend doubles on Saturday and Sunday.

At the psychiatric hospital I pass medications and, occasionally, take telephone orders from the on-call psychiatrists. I am basically being used as a glorified medication aide. It is an easy job, but not very rewarding. Approximately 80 percent of my psych patients are trying to detox from alcohol or illegal drugs.

I prefer working at the nursing home since it pays a higher salary and my skills aren't being marginalized.

how much do psyche nurse's get paid?
