HI everyone,
I will be applying for a very competative BSN program in September 06' and I am looking for some ideas on how I can set myself apart from others and improve my chances of getting accepted into this BSN Program. I have already met with the nursing advior and she was very helpful. I have a 3.48 GPA and my only experience working with people in a clinical setting is through being a massage therapist. I'm looking to see if there is anything I may not have considered. Here are some of my ideas. Please feel free to chime in with any thoughts or ideas.
1. Keep trying to get A's (obviously)
2. Volunteer work (community and Hospital based as per advisors reccomendations)
3. I joined the National student nurses association as well as the local chapter and will get involved in communty volunteer work through them.

Howdy Elizabeth! Are you trying for UNM or NMSU? Or out of state? I'm in UNM's program. Do you already have a degree in another field? I highly recommend learning Spanish. At the hospital where I've done clinical the only people who seem able to converse in Spanish are the custodial staff, so I think Spanish is a HUGE asset here. Are you in a rural area or urban area? If you are rural and thinking of attending school then going back to your rural community they like that. Also, if you are applying to a NM school it's good to stress willingness to work with diverse cultural populations. Don't underestimate any work or life experiences you have had as being unimportant, because often they look closely at people who have diverse interests and experiences. My grades in pre-reqs and ability to at least communicate in Spanish worked for me, I think. I also had some experience as a Nurse's Aide and as an EMT.

Yes UNM is the school I want to get into. I am on the waiting list at TVI but UNM is really where I want to be. I will be taking Spanish as my prerequisite next semester. I'm sure you experience as an EMT was huge! Thats awesome for you. Congradulations. How long have you been in the program? I'd love to hear about your application process if you have the time I can send you a PM.
Thanks for the info.

Thank you analee and onherway for your advice and kind words. I just joined the Student nursing asscociation and they are very involved in community activities. I am going to contact the hospital by my house and see what type of volunteer work I can get involved in. And like always I'm studying my butt off to get my GPA higher.
Thank you everyone for their advice.
