How Can I Prepare for my Second Degree BSN?

Hi there!

I am preparing for a 12 month accelerated second degree BSN program beginning this fall (2018) and I would love some advice from nurses who have been through an intense program like this. I'd like to know what I can do before the start of the program to prepare.

I have already completed all required pre-reqs including A&P I and II, microbiology, pathophysiology and others. I also have a great support system at home and I am prepared to do nothing but school. I am working as a CNA in a hospital right now but I will not work once the program starts.

I've always been a decent student, but I am nervous about learning so much material in such a short time. I also want to mention that my first degree is unrelated to nursing. I have a full 5 months before my program begins and I'd love to get a head start on studying.

What subjects and topics would you suggest that I study? Do you have any recommended books or study materials? What are some study tips that helped you during your program? Any general advice on doing well in a program like this would also be appreciated!

    I'm going to tell you exactly what I was told before I did my ABSN program- by the school and previous students.

    Enjoy your time now. See your family and friends. Take a trip. Read any books you want to. Just relax because once your program starts you won't have as much time. I still had a life outside of my program, but it was more limited. Leading up to my program I continued my nannying job, but I also relaxed, read, went to the beach, went on weekend trips, and did a road trip with my best friend. I started my program refreshed and ready to jump right in.

    I agree with PP. Your program will teach you what you need to know and when you need to know it. Enjoy your freedom and leisure time while you can. As I was starting my 15 month ABSN program, my girlfriend said "I'll see you in 15 months", knowing that we would be spending little leisure time together until it was over.

    This answer all depends on your ability to learn. To be honest, the first semester of the Nursing programs are the hardest because of the following two courses, " Pathophysiology" and "Pharmacology". I have advised and mentored students to learn the material ahead of time for these two classes and they will be fine. Again, there is no shame in studying ahead of time, and I highly encourage it to all people. However, if you're still undecided, just realize it all depends on your skill set. If you are an okay or fast learner, then enjoy your time. If you are not a fast learner, I would suggest you start studying patho and pharmacology ahead of time. Best of Luck.     I am in the same boat as you, Han! Thanks all for the advice thus far!

    I'm working as much as I possibly can right now to secure my finances. Since this is my 2nd degree, I'm not sure what fed loans I'll be given. Hence I would most likely rely on private loans to pay for tuition. Any recommendations? Scholarships and grant websites you may know of? Please inform us!
