I am starting nursing school in the summer semester. What can I do to best prepare in the 5 months that I have because I know school will be difficult for me? I know some people say take a break and relax while you can or prepare yourself to think like a nurse but I am more concerned with the academic side of things.
Is there anything I can get ahead on like with reading, math, med terminology? I know there is a lot of reading involved but I wouldnt know where to start. - Any help please? Or just share with me what you found most difficult - that would be a help too.
Thanks
Absolutely! It's wonderful. Yes, it's hard, but really, I was so busy that I forgot how hard it was until my holiday break. Do you know what I mean? 7 people dropped/failed out so far out of 75, but they were complainers and I think that they got caught up in the little things. I'm really nice to my professors, believe me, if you just do what they ask you to then it will make school a lot less stressful, like them or not. I'm a single mother with a full time job, it can be done if you just put it into the right perspective and just do what you have to do and remember that it will be over with before you know it. How are you? I remember how stressed I was before I started, especially when I was waiting on my acceptance letter, gosh, pins and needles for 2 months. Where do you live?
i live in detroit,mi and i am attending a community college.their acceptance letters were sent out in oct. for a jan start. i want to become a crna. my program will end in may of 2011. you had to pass the net with a certain score/% in each subject and have taken all of your prerequistes. i need to get a bachelor degree to get into crna school. or i can just do a bridge program rn-msn. our school is linked with 4yr universities to help us obtain that bsn.however, the msn is the same amount of time. just looking at my options because a year will be here before you know it. lol
I live in Houston. Your program is shorter than mine so we will be graduating at the same time. I am also an aspiring CRNA. I posted a question similar to something you just mentioned, about getting a masters first, before the program, and no one seems to think there is any reason for me to do that. But, I had someone tell me at work that their sister got her masters first and it shortened the amount of time she was in nurse anesthesia school because she was able to take some of the same classes while getting her masters, hm. Well, I'm confused, lol. I'd like to talk to you more about it if you don't mind. Maybe we can share some research about it or something.
yes, ms. hazel we must keep in touch i will add you as a friend. i just joined this cite about 2 days ago lol. the nursing school that i am attending admits twice a year. the fall which starts in aug and they go all year and have june july off.the next class starts in jan. and we do not get a break. the school admits 160 i beleive in fall and 40 students in winter (jan). they have decided to start another class in may of 80 students.this will be the 2nd class of admits this may. how long is your program? if you count my pre requistes it's longer but, you have to have them completed before you begin. after, graduation i need to work in icu, ccu, so i can get the experience needed for the crna program. lol don't even know if you can start there as a newly graduate. i will find some way to give you my email address. the time is off with the web cites clock. i am in az and it is 10:24 p.m. saturday night. lol

hey tucker-jones are you going to hfcc, sounds like it. that's where i will be attending starting in their may 2010 class. they called me for the winter 2010 class but i couldn't start for financial reasons. i'm really nervouse about starting like everyone else and excited at the same time. i have been on the waiting list for almost 2 years. they have an awesome program though. also, do you know how the spring starting date will run. are there any breaks or does it go straight thru until you graduate.
yes, i will be attending hfcc this winter. however, i do not know how the may class will run. i actually was responding to someone that asked the question "how can i perpare for rn school?" and lol people have been responding. i don't want to take away from the person who asked the question. i hope they don't think that. i would ask the nursing office when will you graduate if you start in may. that might help. have they mailed out the invites to start the program in may already? yes, i have been on their waiting list for almost 2yrs. i am nervous and excitied. i am not looking at it like it is nursing school because it brings on more pressure. if, i can just look at it as another class i should be ok. next year will be here before you know it. good luck and kit.:nuke:
No dont worry, you havent taken anything away. Its good to hear concerns and questions from other nursing students and to find out what other people are thinking/dealing with as they embark on their nursing career. And thanks to everyone who gave input on how to prepare for school - a great help.
Yes, the info has been helpful indeed!
I'm starting an Accelerated BSN program in June--all the nursing curriculum in one year! I know it's going to be intense, so I'm starting to prepare now to hopefully take some of the stress off during the program.
I'm currently signed up to take pharmacology at a city college so I won't have to take either one or both of the pharm classes required during the program, as I hear thats the hardest subject. I'm also trying to enroll in biomath too.. its only one unit, but every little bit helps, right?
To get to my question, I've acquired the fifth edition of Fundamentals of Nursing by Potter and Perry as well as an NCLEX review book. I'm wondering, do you think it would be more beneficial for me to comb the NCLEX review book or the Fundamentals of Nursing book before my program starts? I only have the time to tackle one, but I want to get the best foundation for my upcoming ordeal.
Thanks!
MsHazel

Our program is 75.00 or above, rounded to the hundredths as well. Also, keep in mind that you must have a good GPA for advanced nursing degrees. I didn't find a recorder helpful, most of what we are tested on in my school comes from what we read from our text, so listening to the lecture again waste the valuable little bit of time we have to read and reread the material and just write down anything that is important. If I were you I would get a cheap one first and see if it is helpful before investing in one $70 or more. Also, it is law (according to our professors) that you must have the permission of the entire class and faculty before anyone can record any lectures or tutoring every time we want to record, so just a heads up.
