How can i get my foot in the door to becoming a correctional nurse in philadelphia?

Published

I really wanna be a correctional nurse sooo bad! I also want to work in a longterm care facility because its so important to get your first yrs experience. And i am a new nurse..........i passed my nclex-pn dec 29 Yaaaay!! But everywhere i go, they want that 1 or 2 yrs experience first. I dont know what to do because i do work for 2 agencies but i havent worked a case yet lololol. But its really not that funny cuz im broke. Any advice? Anybody from philly that works as a correctional nurse or know how to get in?? Or a longterm care facility/nursing home?

The Prison in Chester, Pa is hiring look on career builder. They do ask for experience, but apply anyway. I work as a correctional nurse in Delaware for the last 2 years, but i had experience as an officer prior to becoming a nurse. Prison health services are the agency for Philadelphia county jails.

So how did u get in? you just filled out the online app and waited for them to call you or did you know who to contact? I filled out an application but.......you know how that goes. I dont think they will pic me out of 200 other applicants that may have more experience than me. Most of them have to know someone, or get lucky by being plucked from the pile of applicants.

Are you willing to work in NJ? I applied for the facility in Camden and they were willing to hire a new nurse - but I needed to get a NJ license. I decided I didn't wasnt to drive to NJ (I live in plymouth meeting area) and didn't really think they could pay me enough to make it worth my while.

I went on the state site and filled out the application and got a position number. I understand it is a waiting game. You have to start somewhere and I understand the more experience you get the higher on the list you go - so find anything for now to get the experience.

i have heard that some of the local agencys such as General Healthcare Resorces (GHR) staff to prisons. U could call around to the local agencys and ask specifically if they staff there. It would also be a good way to "try it out" and see if u like it before comitting to a major position..Sound like a neat job to me tho..i knew a prison nurse once.
