How busy are you?

Published

I was discussing my work load with the office staff at lunch yesterday and one of the admins asked how my work load compared with other school nurses. I don't really know, so I have a few questions for you:

1) What school level do you support?

2) How many students are in your school?

3) How many students do you see each day?

4) Do you have an assistant?

5) What do you treat mostly?

Specializes in Adult M/S.

I have 6 schools in the half of the county I'm responsible for. Schools range from 6 kids in the more rural schools to 100+ in the pre k - 8 here in town. M,T,F i'm in town. W,Th out on the road.

In town it's-

1) PreK-8 about 160 kids; HS on the other side of town about 80.

2) I see anywhere from 10-20 a day. 3) I have a part time health assistant about 20 hrs/week

3) The office staff handles daily meds. I see a lot of scrapes, cuts, vague feelings of being sick (Mondayitis), sore arms/legs,1 DM kid I have to track down 2-3 times a day although he is getting better, HA, lice, poison oak, bug bits, unexplained rashes, and a big one- tooth pain from no dental care, 1 kid who is either going blind, deaf, limbs are numb, etc. depending on the day. We've also had numerous kids dx w/Lyme disease but that's more because the NP in the health clinic in town is incompetant.

I have had the opportunity to float to several schools in my large metropolis; and so far, I have not seen a consistent way that things are done. I am specially in the school for the chronically ill students such as diabetics, seizures, asthma, and even trachs. There is a long list of illnesses that qualify. I work in one middle school. Along with me, there is also a CHI clinic with a NP and PCT. They are a totally separate entity. Technically, I am not supposed to even talk to the students that come in for cuts and scrapes. But I help sometimes anyway. I watch the clinic when they're at lunch. I won't see anyone with a major problem. I feel that I might get in trouble if I do. There are about 1500 students in this school and I have 4 that I see every day.

The majority of students come in for cuts needing bandaids, bumps needing ice, and kotex. :).
