How do you break in to mother-baby

Specialties Ob/Gyn

I have been a nurse for 9 years now working with med/surg population. I have tried to transfer to mother/baby. The hospital where I work had 3 positions posted in the mother/baby unit but I was told they were not interested in me because I have no experience in mother/baby. So, how do you get experience if they won't hire you:confused:. Please tell me how you were able to get a job in this area.

Maybe not helpful but I had a friend in this bind and she got experience by taking a Peds job. The unit got a lot of babies and she was able to parlay that to a mother/baby job at a different facility.

It's frustrating , I know. I wanted Occ Health so bad and no one would hire me. I ended up taking temp jobs for maternity leaves in Occ Health and that got my toe in the door.

This is why I went straight in after grad because I had a friend who got "stuck" in med/surg. She was told to get her year in med surg then try for OB, but found out she was in the same boat as you!

What about labor and delivery or antepartum? Those would be great places w/ your M/S background. Also, apply at all the hospitals around and be very, very persistent!! Go for every and any OB job out there...

Good luck!

When I finally decided it was time to pursue my dreams and desires to be an OB nurse I started to apply. I got pretty discouraged pretty quick in the game and out of mere desperation I picked up the phone and called a previous employer and their HR.

Her and I quickly started talking 2-3 times a week and she helped me get a couple of interviews (this facility owns/operates 3 hospitals in this area). I fell totally and absolutely in love with the first OB job I interviewed at. The unit, the manager, the orientation, the staff - it was all a perfect fit for me. I will do a little of everything there from M/B to L&D and everything in between.

Persistence and a bit of desperation is finally what got me my job in OB :p
