How to Become an NP in Canada

Published

Hello new to the forum just wanted to know about the pathway to become a Nurse Practitioner in Canada.

If I understand correctly you would complete a 4 year BSN or 2 year ABSN and then work for a minimum of 2 years as an RN to apply for a 2 year MSN to become a NP? Is this correct? Can anyone from Canada specifically in Ontario verify this. Do you know if the programs are competitive and need more than the minumum 2 years of experience and the B+ grade requirement (I have heard that 5 years of exp are becoming the norm)? Also I hear about pathways where you get a MSN seprarate from the PHCNP certificate is that something different?

Would anyone reccommend going to the states and doing a Direct Entry MSN to become an RN + post masters certificate instead after working as an RN to become an NP? I would still get about 3 years of exp of RN but overall the educational pathway is shorter.

Thanks for your help!
