How to become an NICU nurse

I read your post and we are so much alike!! I myself am 18 (I graduated when I was 16) and am also in determination to become an RN and work in the NICU!!! I have a baby boy named Ryden, who was born July 6, 2003, and he wasn't supposed to be born until September 26, 2003. Ryden was 12 weeks early and weighed only 2 lbs 9.5 oz, and was 15 inches long. He was in the NICU for 74 long days, and after all that had happend to me, I had found myself wanting and needing to become a nurse in the NICU. I learned all of the terms and even began doing things with Ryden that the nurse would do!

After having Ryden my life had changed, before I wasn't so sure what I wanted to do for a career, and now after seeing and being there to witness every little thing a baby has to offer I too am going to go to school to become a nurse in the NICU. I'm glad you both want to become nurses. My first job as an RN was in the NICU. I loved it! When my husband and I moved, the nearest NICU was 80 miles. Instead, I worked in CCU, and after many years progressed to work in OB/nursery.

You first want to complete your nursing education. Then, I would look at the requirements established by whatever institution you would want to work. I would do this in your last year of your nursing program. You could talk to the nurse recruiter at the instituition. Hope this helps.:)

i'm graduating in may and i have an interview for a new grad position in an nicu coming up, any advice? i really want this job.

I would suggest you all search for these topics within the nicu forum... There have been several great threads on these topics over the last few months!
