How to become a Home Health Nurse in Minnesota?

Published

I currently work at an Assisted Living Facility in Minnesota. I am an ADN RN and was wondering how I can become a home health nurse. It states in the rules that in order to teach a person home health tasks that I either need to be a home health nurse, have a BSN, or have experience in training in home health. How can I go about becoming a home health nurse? Does anyone know what experience in training that a person may need? I was an LPN for 2 years and have been a RN for almost a year. Thanks for your help.

What specifically is in the job description for your perspective employer? What are there requirements for previous work related experience?

Greeting from Rochester. I have not seen a BSN qualification for home health nurses at agencies in this area. I have seen the requirement for public health nurses. Where I work both BSN and ADNs are Case Managers and do nursing visits.

The specific job requirements is that I do staff training, visits, care plans, etc. I called to the Dept. of Health and they stated that the rule of thumb for having "home care" experience is 1 year of working in that type of setting but it does not clearly state that in the rules and regs. I am very confused and cannot get a straight answer from the dept. of health or the state board of nursing.

Have you requested an "informational interview" with any home health agency administrator to inquire if your experience will qualify you with a position there?

I checked our job descriptions. RN Case Managers Qualifications are: RN licensure, one year experience in acute care setting or equivalent experience.

I took a look at the state rules and don't see any specific requirements.

You can view the rules at www.health.state.mn.us Follow Main Categories -- Facility --licenses and registration -- home health licensing -- Class A professional license the MN rules -- Rules 4668.
