How not to appear frustrated or overwhelmed

Nurses Stress 101

I need help fast. I had my 90 day eval in a new job. Almost everything was excellent. Then I was told that I need to work on not appearing frustrated or overwhelmed. My probation was extended by 2 more months. What are some things I can do to project calm???

This may or may not be helpful to you, but I think it's important to pay attention to my breathing. If my breathing is not good, it is harder to stay calm in the situation. I try to take a deep breath and focus on my priorities. Another thing that I started doing, and I don't know if this will help you or not.... is I deliberately try to smile when answering a phone or pager because I know I'm feeling frustrated and I don't want that to come across on the phone.

I personally practice my yoga breathing when under duress. My coworkers make comments about how I "never get flustered," which is categorically untrue. I get plenty flustered. I just don't show it.

If I feel like I'm going to lose my cool, I simply excuse myself for "a bathroom break" or to "get supplies" where I can go sit for 30 sec or so and gather myself, practice breathing and continue breathing as I dive back in. Quick re-charge, if you will.
