How to ace/land interviews while on probation?

Published

Does anyone have any tips for landing/nailing an interview while on probation/monitoring?  What did you guys say or do that you felt was beneficial?  How did you disclose that you were on monitoring or that you had stipulations to your new bosses? And besides that, how open were you about your recovery to your coworkers?

There are several posts about your subject in question. They may be old posts but they have provided me with great detail how to prepare for interviews. Best wishes to you.

I wish I could!  I haven't landed a job since my probation and I've only managed to get one call back.  But I'm hopeful that my time is coming!

I don't know your story but I imagine that your time is coming too!  I've read through this forum and have gathered the following advice from others, I hope it helps some and keeps you from having to read through 100s of pages LOL.

Be upfront and honest about your situation.   Some say to tell the interviewer early and get it out of the way and some say wait until the end after you've gotten them to like you. I honestly have no clue which one works the best.

They say to sell yourself and your strengths and skills.  Spin your monitoring as a good thing. As in you are more dedicated, you won't be late or call off to often, and you won't cause drama bc the board is on you.

My personal advice (not what I've read on this forum) just follows normal interviewing advice.  Arrive early, wear something nice and professional, turn off your phone.  If you have really bad anxiety like I do then be mindful of your body language.  don't cross your arms, smile often, don't chew your nails (horrible habit I know!  I only do when I'm super stressed).  And the best advice of all:  just breathe.  It's just an interview.  Good luck!

Those are spot on suggestions.  One other thing I did was to have my CM provide me with a letter outlining my restrictions. Luckily, mine were few (no narc restrictions at all), so the interviewer could immediately see what the terms were.  Every one of them thanked me for being upfront and bringing the letter.

LTC, dialysis center, doctor office, plasma centers, etc may not be your ideal job but they work with us!

I got lucky.   One of the facilities near me emailed the leader of my mandatory nurses support group and asked if any nurses were looking for jobs and gave her info.   I'm in PNAP, which is the PA nurse monitoring program, so they knew before I even interviewed.  I was also honest about what they would find on my background check, which is misdemeanor possession charges.  They thanked me for my honesty and said that wouldn't disqualify me.  I got the job.
