Houston area- where do you work while you're in school?

Hey I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on where you worked while you were in school. Obviously, I don't have any kind of degree yet or certification, but would like to work in some sort of medical field- just to become acclimated to that type of environment. Im not in ns school yet, just pre-nurs. Any suggestions?

Don't if you can help it! Over the summer during nursing school, I did an externship at St. Luke's....learned way more there than I ever learned in clinicals.

Cool thanks- I'm not a full time student yet tho, not in nursing school yet, I can afford to work a little, even tho I know I'll be busy. Any suggestions?

I'd try to be a PCA/Nurse tech somewhere. It's doesn't require a CNA - it's on the job training. A med/surg unit would probably help you out most in school. Hospitals usually list their openings online.. http://www.hcacareers.com has a bunch of different hospitals in the Houston area....HCA affliated of course, but there are a ton of them.

I think there was a job fair ad in this past sunday's (6/22) Houston Chronicle job section. The ad stated the nursing job fair is scheduled for July __ , not sure on the date exactly -- look for the ad. If you're serious about pursuing a job in the healthcare industry this would be a great opportunity to meet directly with recruiters. Good luck.

I would do as the earlier poster suggested, but, as soon as you are enrolled in nursing classes (anything that starts with your schools nursingprefix), even if it's just a required prereq, like nursing as a career, or pharmacology, I would look for a job as a student nurse.

if you can afford to take the time to work while in school, student nurse would be great. you get practical experience, you are free to ask lots of questions, and if you are at a place that you like, more likely than not, they will hire you when you graduate.
