hours per day

How many hours per day do you put into studying for your nursing classes? I've heard a lot of different answers. Also, do you think there is such a thing as studying TOO much? Can you freak yourself out because you "don't get it all at once"?

Studying advice?

THANKS

Too much at once is a no go. Study as much as you want but make sure to take breaks and take care of yourself as well or you won't even retain your information. Frequent breaks, don't skip meals and eat healthy, get enough sleep!

^^ Agreed. For me, getting enough sleep so I can focus well is pretty much key.

I'm in my first term of the program (we just started two weeks ago). I tend to spend at least 6-8 hours studying every weekday and I take the weekends off from studying. I'm one of those people that would rather do it all at once and then have a day or two to relax and maintain my sanity.

I've wondered this same thing. I just applied for spring and have a 2 year old daughter. I've been a stay at home mom, so she's always with me an I worry about how much time I'll have with her.

During my first go-round in college, I probably spent about 1.5 hours studying for every 1 hour in class. I did OK. Turns out that while I was getting results, I wasn't studying using what really works best for me. Fast forward a few years and changing methods a little bit, and my classroom-study time ratio is about 1:1. Of course, it helps that I acquired a pretty good depth of knowledge way back when. I'm simply adding to the knowledge bank rather than creating a whole new foundation of knowledge. I figure that overall, I'm still about a 1:1 ratio but I spend much of my time doing some very targeted studying.

Some of my classmates ask me how I study. While I tell them my method, I also remind them that I'm coming from a different place academically than they are, so studying the way I do won't be very effective for them. I normally suggest reading our assigned material from the syllabus, reading the powerpoints/lecture notes, then go back and review the material that was gone over in class, and then do the questions in the book/online resources that we have. Before an exam, I review the powerpoints, read the chapter summaries, and perhaps redo the questions.

It does work for me. Next semester, I'll be modifying my study schedule once again because I'm going to be getting more new material.
