Hospital Technology Question

Published

I am doing a project for a healthcare IT class. I have never worked at a hospital so I just have a quick simple question. When nurses go to a computer to chart or get results or anything computer related, do you have to manually log in or can you swipe a card that will log you in with maybe a pin number?? I am trying to come up with a plan to make accessing the computer quicker and simpler. :nurse:

I have to log in to access anything. But the idea of just swiping in sounds like it would be a time saver.

Depending on a physical item (ie a card) to access the system can be a security risk. It means that if the card is lost, anyone can enter the system.

A knowledge-based system (ie a user id and a password), is much more secure.

Log-in now but have used swipe in the past, faster but don't ever forget your card!

I would say that using both a card and a pin would take longer than just typing a user id, hitting tab to move to the password box and typing your pin/password.

How about a thumb print ID? They're not super expensive anymore (they come standard with some laptops) and you get the security of a password with the convenience of a swipe card...and they're hard to forget at home.

The Pyxis/med cart at one of the hospitals I did clincials in had thumb prints instead of user id's. It was super convenient, it took us just a minute to set up and it was one less password to track.
