Hospital scholarships?

Published

Anyone know of any hospitals in the state that offer scholarships in return for a work commitment?

Thanks! :)

Thanks so much for responding. The offer sounds too good to be true. What was the salary like? How long ago did you work there? Did you work there at all while attending school? Did it take you four years to reimburse them or did you choose to stay that long?

Thanks a bunch,

Beth

I worked as an RN at Whitfield for 4 years. I loved it! I only left because I found an equally rewarding job at our local county jail. I was an "Ed Leave" nurse. Once I was accepted to nursing school, I applied at Whitfield. They paid me a monthly salary in return for a 4 year commitment to work there.

I didn't find it hard to work there at all. In fact, the last year I worked there, I was a supervisor.

I'm not sure exactly of my salary while there. I think I made around 18 an hour with 10% shift differential. I worked there the full four years of my contract. It costs alot to break your contract with interest rates and such. I didn't work there while going to school. They paid me 1,000 monthly (twelve months a year) while I was in school. You have the option of working there in the summer or continuing to go to class. I took summer school courses that were approved by them (I took electives like speech, art appreciation, literature, etc.)

I truly loved my four years there. As I said before, I only left because I stumbled into a better job (no nights, no weekends) with better pay. The benefits at Whitfield are good. The one thing that Mississippi can be proud of is the benefits if employed by the state and the retirement system.

I urge you to check this program out. You can work psych or nursing home, but most of the ed leave nurses are placed in psych work.

Good luck,

Cyndy

I know that I am fairly late in the discussion, but the University of Mississippi in Jackson offers a good program and has a wide range of areas in which to work.

I live in central MS and I'm applying to MUW's BSN program. :)

All hospitals in the Jackson area offer scholarships.

Whitfield is the 1100/mo after you enter 2nd semester

CMMC, UMC, River Oaks and Baptist are all about 1500/semester (one is 2 grand a semester)

I just got on the educational leave program out at whitfield :) I'm on cloud nine right now. But psych is what i really want to do, so i don't think the work out there will be bad. Some people just aren't very comfortable working around psych pts. The do have a med/surg area and also the nursing home. So if any of those would be of any interest, look into them.

all the people i've talked to that went in on the ed leave program and started working out there after school, they have absolutley loved it and most are still out there.

good luck in whatever y'all decide to do!

I am also interested in the educational leave program at whitfield. I have my application already. I am starting a 2 year nursing program in august so I won't be eligable until January. Could you tell me about the process? How long did it take after you applied to find out, what all you had to do, etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated! also, should I apply now or wait until just before my 2nd semester?

every major hospital in the jackson/brandon area does. Also, don't make the same mistake I did, I missed out on 8K $ of free money, thats right, 8 K$ dollars of free money. Apply for the nursing scholarship at IHL (MS institute of higher learning). You just have to work 2 years in state full time as a nurse anywhere. after you graduate and you don't have to pay it back, you can get this IN ADDITION to hospital money. Apply early, there are limited funds. If you missed it for your first year, you can still get 4 K for your second year, Apply early, I missed it the first year, and applied to close to the deadline the second year and they ran out of money. OUCH! it is so easy too!

SCRMC in Laurel has one and so does Forrest General in Hattiesburg. I also got a rural health scholarship of $500 in return for working in a rural area (anywhere but metro Jackson and Biloxi-Gulfport) for 6 months per $500. Good luck in school. I just finished my first semester of the ADN program at JCJC in Ellisville.
