What sort of issues can occur when applying for hospital privileges as an APRN? Such as any history as a RN employed with that hospital system that has someone listed as "not eligible for rehire". I can go into more details later, especially later this week when I get some results back.
hello yellow finch,
I know it's been awhile since you started this thread regarding credentialing problems. I am applying for my first NP job at a hospital. I am worried that my work history (which consists of about 21 past employers , some who I did not give resignation notice) will cause me not to get credentialed. Will you tell me how your application experience turned out?
Are these previous staff RN jobs? I've been credentialed in at least 3 different health systems and don't recall ever being asked for my RN experience. The application form does ask for previous appointments in other hospitals as a nurse practitioner. It asks for previous malpractice coverage as well as training programs attended (including NP program attended, NP certifications, BLS and ACLS, CME's, training in clinical procedures and actual number of procedures performed).
I just also would like to add that credentialing is approved by the hospital's Medical Affairs board not by HR, not by nursing. They typically do a background check just like HR does but I doubt that they will dig up info on your previous employers as a nurse. You also may have to give them names of three peers (NP's or physicians) who can vouch for your competence as a clinician. The members of this board are physicians and typically a non-physician representative (such as a PA or NP).

I'm credentialed with every hospital in town (five) and I didn't have any problem. However, I had never worked at any of them as a R.N.
All of the hospitals will let NP's write orders (excluding controlled substances even with a DEA#) without a doctor's co-signature.
