Holiday rotations...
How about working the day before a holiday, or working a weekend before a holiday? I 'm having real difficulty understanding the fairness in working a Friday, off Saturday, then working sunday , then off Monday the actual holiday (Memorial). It just doesn't seem to be fair. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Can someone educate me about FMLA, please?
Contact HR or Employee Health Service. They should have forms for your physician to complete, indicating your condition, your limitations, and how long you need off from work. Take care.

Hospital privileges... possible problems?
hello yellow finch, I know it's been awhile since you started this thread regarding credentialing problems. I am applying for my first NP job at a hospital. I am worried that my work history (which consists of about 21 past employers , some who I did not give resignation notice) will cause me not to get credentialed. Will you tell me how your application experience turned out?

Having issues with MSN Practicum, location and MSN preceptor
I hope you found a preceptor. If not, have you tried the community colleges, state universities, or public health-clinics? Also, check which sites / facilities your college has a contract already in set in place. Other options may be approaching a physician who may be working with an NP (usually don't need a contract with a private office). I wish you the best! Let us know how you're doing. stillpinay

Getting in shape/Losing weight in pre-nursing/NS support thread
Count me in too! I work 36 hrs/week in an ICU, and at the end of the day (a loooong day!) I can woof up anything in sight! Needless to say, I've gained weight. It's become very difficult now, thought, to take off the weight (and to control the emotional binging). So, a good support group is "deemed necessary." Does anyone have any suggestions besides a low carb, high protein, (and of course: low fat) diet, daily 30 min exercise (walks), and freq small meals? Has anyone watched "I can make you thin" by Paul McKenna? It's based on tapping techniques (requires a lot of practice) and self talk/encouragement.

Determine your body fitness
Hello everyone, I also disagree with the use of BMI to determine health and fitness. Has anyone heard of Dr. Mehmet Oz's of simplified measurement of a healthy body (remember, this is just for simplicity sake): waist measurement for female= or less than 32 inches; for males= or less than 37 inches. He explains this in his book "you on a diet." Anyhow, does anyone have any comment on this (re:waist measurement)?

NOC shift-how do you arrange your sleep?
I've heard that to induce sleep during the day (ideally 9a-5p): 1) cover the windows with dark shades making the room as dark as possible (this helps increase the level of melatonin to induce sleep) 2) turn the ringer off and let the answering machine pick up calls. If you have kids, tell them to wake you up only if : a) it's a matter of life or death situation b) something in the house is on fire or flooding c) or any other true emergencies you can think of; 3) have a small fan to provide white noise that helps induce sleep. Good luck!

working night shift, gaining weitght .....HELP!!!!!!
I share the same sentiments. I've gained alot weight also from working nights (munching on unhealthy snacks at work then too tired to work out (even too tired to do anything at home). I work 3 12's in a row so that my actual first day off I spend sleeping and /or staying by the TV lounging ang stuffing my face. Most of the time I feel as if I have to savor each minute that I am alone (I have 3 kids and am a single mom) to reward myself and gear myself for the next 3 horrendous nights at work. This past summer, though, I got into jogging (at least for 30 min./day), drank lots of water, joined my kids with outdoor sports, and ate mostly raw vegetables (definitely keeps you regular, at least 3 x a day!). I did lose ~10lbs (mostly water). Then, I got more motivated to going to the gym, even right before going to work. I wish I could say I'm still on that track. But, the weather is getting colder (I'm in NY) and those salads are getting old. I figure, though, this slump-period is definitely seasonal (like seasonal depression). Anyhow, short term goals (such as: make it to the gym, spend at least 20 min on the tread mill at least 3 x week) may help you get started. Anyone else with input? Let's keep in touch. I'm rooting for your success!!!!

Before work mental pep! :)
I had been working in an ICU where you can surely expect lots of crises going on. And knowing that and saying to myself "I'll do the best I can, I won't try to be the superhero or God" both helped me get to work. Being in a good team also helped alot: you do for your co-workers if you can, and they do come in when you need it. And lastly, bringing in snacks (even as simple as a bag of chips or a box of Entenmann's) for the Unit and saying "thank you" (I know this sounds all too elementary) helps the Unit's morale and encourages "coffee breaks-on-the-run while you either go the fax or check labs on the computer!
