Hospice and New Grad CNA

Published

My situation is that I will be graduating from my CNA program in 2 weeks. I have 4 days left of skills and 1 week of clinicals. Well in the 1st week of classes we had a recruit come to our class and speak to us about working at a local hopsital in my city private duty prn in Hospice. I was wondering do you think it would be a good decision being a new grad until I take my state exam for my Certification? I get out the program on May 9th and will have to wait 3 wks until I take my state exam and be put on the state registry. So this would be a good way to start making cash. Also since it is PRN the recruiter said I would be able to make my schedule. And work any days I would like. They are starting off with a pretty good base pay so it did get my interest. He also said that as long as I would work 1 8hr shift for them within a 2yr period I could work for them anytime. So do you all think this would be good for a start?

Oh definitely!

I think that any experience is GREAT! Around here alot of hospitals don't even hire you without some sort of experience...so alot of new grads end up working in LTC/Nursing home situations...and maybe that isn't what they are wanting. I think anything that can give you experience, and you can work as much or as little as you want to...it's better than no experience, and better than no money at all!

I'd go for it! Just make sure that if you're going to put it on your resume you work for experience, and work to make a good impression. I work at a hospital (36-48 hours/wk) and work PRN for an in-home-care company here in my city. I usually only do 10-20 hours a month for them...but it's nice to have a little extra cash if I need it...and something different once in a while.

Good luck to you!

Well thanks for your reply.... The company is through a local hospital here but I'm thinking its a separate department in the hospital facility. Its a separate department I belive to say the least connected to the hospital. Also after working 624hrs 4-6 months. I can earn additional flexibillty to work in Home Care Cases. What I will be starting out in is Hospice Private Duty though. Yeah, I agree I'm not really feeling the LTC/ Nursing home environment neither. I rather work with and in a more diverse environment. I'm hoping to use this experience though to move into working for the Hosptial. Since this job is PRN I hope to work a fulltime job M-F with 40hrs. Then working with this as well in hospice on Saturdays, 8 or 12hr. I hope to do this until school starts just to save money. So this would put me at 40-52hrs a week. Sounds crazy I know but ready to rack up on some cash, lol.

Go for it!

I'm just getting started in Home Health/Hospice - LTC just really wasn't for me. On the plus side, I was thrown into having to do absolutely EVERYTHING myself and QUICKLY, so that strengthened my skills - but I was so uncomfortable knowing that working in that sort of capacity impeded me from giving what I would consider optimal care. Home Health and Hospice are where it's at!:nurse::up:
