Hoping To Get an ER Job!

Published

Hey everyone,

I just applied for an ER position. and I'm hoping I get it! I currently work cardiac/telemetry, but have always wanted to work in the ER. It's an 11a-11p shift, which I've heard can be crazy, but will work better for my lifestyle as I currently work dayshift and hate getting up so early!! Hope I get called for an interview!! Can any of you ER nurses tell me what managers will be looking for in a potential employee??

I'm just so excited, hopefully one day soon I can say I'm a ER nurse too!:yeah:

Good Luck to you.

Some things off the top of my head would be

-Multitasking

-ability to do a focused assessment and do it quickly

-proficient at starting IVs

-be able to constantly shift priorities

-can make independent judgements (ER nurses have to be able to identify which set of protocols to use and have the tests/labs ordered/drawn & even some meds given, before the doc ever sees the patient).

-Thick skinned

-And, the answer that got me my first job in the ER "I have a warped and sick sense of humor"

Thanks for the advice! Definitely got that thick skin, it takes a lot to hurt my feelings, lol. Got most of the others down, working on my iv skills more, not the greatest currently. Looking forward to at least get an interview!

Good Luck. Hope you get the interview.

Just remember to say what I did if you are asked "What makes you think that you would be a good fit in the ER?"
