Hoping for some feedback or advice on what to do!!!

I am an LPN at a LTCF. I work with an STNA who deliberately starts drama like no one Ive ever seen before I have talked to her time and time again to quit running her mouth and I'm at my wits end! She is two faced and even the DON and administrator want to fire but won't bc we are so short staffed right now! I'm just venting but hoping for some feedback or advice on what to do!!! She makes my job a lot harder than it needs to be!

Is it possible to ask for a transfer to another unit or another shift? Also, a good DNS won't just keep a warm body in place because of short staffing. A good DNS brings the employee through the appropriate disciplinary action and hires a replacement if necessary. Most people would rather work short than to work with someone like that. A good DNS would recognize that and try to prevent good staff from leaving because of the drama one bad apple is creating!

I have thought about transferring but it just seems if I do that, she wins. She is a snotty little brat and needs to be fired, period. She is also one write-up away from being fired. Our DON is one who keeps people because we are short staffed, unfortunately but that's how it goes. The drama this 19 year old creates is enough for me to pull my hair out lol Thanks for your advice! I technically am her supervisor although she fails to see that. I also don't get much backing from my DON or Administrator, they both tell me how much they dislike her and want her gone, so why is she still employed?

Just ignore her and don't get involved under any circumstances. She's management's problem, not yours.

In this economy they cannot find a replacement? That seems absurd.

First, I've never seen/heard the term STNA before... is that the equivalent of a CNA?

Secondly, as a nurse you technically have the ability to write other employees up, both CNA's and other nurses. Don't be afraid to do so if it is called for, especially in a case where verbal warnings/mediation of unsatisfactory behavior go unheeded or no change/effort to change is seen.

Edit: As a general rule, I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. Try finding out if there is something going on with this person to cause this behavior?

The Department of Public Health in every state has a hotline number. If any of this behavior is affecting resident care and you don't feel management is doing anything about it, then give a call. You can remain totally anonymous without fear of reprisal.

Thank you all! It's hard because I have only been a nurse for a year and haven't had experience as 'supervisor' before...I have brought this to my DONs attention and the administrator...nothing is being done and I'm fed up! They can't keep people there and I feel horrible for the residents bc I know they don't get the care they deserve! Problem is this particular STNA ( state tested nursing assistant) picks up a lot of shifts and I know they won't fire her...ugh I'm just aggravated! Lol

It's not that easy...somehow I am the one left to deal with all her drama bc it causes conflict between staff/residents...seriously I've never met a person who lies as much as this girl does!!!
