Hopeful SSU nursing student for Fall 2014

U.S.A. California

I handed in my application for SSU Nursing the other day... Now I'm dying of anticipation! Any other hopeful nursing students for Fall 2014 out there? What were your grades and scores like? What schools did you apply to?

I also applied to SRJC, COM, and CSUEB

Hopefully we will be classmates! :)

I have! I noticed they had different professors for the N 301 labs. Does that mean we get separated into 2 groups?

Also are you taking any GE courses the first semester?

Yes, there will be two groups that go to SRMH and Kaiser (SRMH for med/surg and Kaiser for maternal child) and one at Sutter. You'll have ------------ if you go to SRMH and ------------ if you go to Sutter. For our class, the groups were assigned, but I'm given to understand that the class above you got to choose.

If you can possibly avoid it, don't take any classes in addition to RN classes your first semester. I crammed my 3 upper division classes in over the summer, and I'm SOOO glad I did it that way.

Georgettes, that's interesting and I didn't notice that there's different instructors. I just signed up for the first section for both 301 and 303. I assume we get split into different groups for clinicals but I imagine we'll all be together for skills labs? I'm not planning on taking any upper division GE this first semester. I don't know how hard nursing school is, but I assume the first semester is absolutely chaotic adjusting to an entire new life as a nursing student, so that will be my focus. I put off poly sci so I'll be taking that online next summer through SRJC (way cheaper!) and then also doing a GE class in the summer at SSU. Then I think I'd do my last GE class my third semester, cause it's the only semester that's only 12 units as opposed to 15.

RunBabyRun, do you get to go to all those hospitals for clinicals or are you stuck at one all semester?

By the way, RunBabyRun, I love your new avatar! That's one stunning graduation cap, and once again, congrats :)

You'll be assigned to one of those clinical groups, and won't rotate through all of the hospitals. It works better, for the sake of continuity. A couple of people did switch the second year, but I know there were specific reasons for that (to which I am not privy). I liked my clinicals at Sutter, and I liked knowing where things were and knowing the nurses well by the third semester.

Your peds, psych and community health rotations will be elsewhere (ALL OVER, so I couldn't even begin to list the possibilities here). Peds and community health (and of course preceptorship) are very independent compared to the other rotations.

Thanks! Can't wait to wear that cap Saturday! :)

Wow! Congrats RunBabyRun!!

I remember them talking about two online GE courses that will be available spring next year during orientation so I will probably try and get one of the requirements done at that time and then maybe another course over the summer next year.

Also I signed up for the second class listed for N 301 and N 303 haha!

RunBabyRun - do you know what will happen with clinicals at sutter when they switch buildings this year? I'm not sure how well I'd do with an intimidating instructor, but I do know I work 100x better under pressure so maybe I'll switch sections to be in --------------'s group. Also love the idea of being in Sutter because I already have a foot in there/connections from my volunteer work. So I think I'll switch to the second section. Thank you for your help!

@RunBabyRun - do you think renting is better than buying the textbooks?

I have no idea how they're planning to handle the move, as far as clinicals go. You can always ask the instructors, and potentially switch groups if someone is willing to switch with you.

I've never rented mine, but I do sell them on half.com, so really, it's kind of a wash. I do like having some of them to reference. The David Drug Guide and Nursing Diagnosis manual you'll use through the whole program, so don't rent those or get rid of them!!

Okay! I can't wait to start. @RunBabyRun, what was the most stressful or surprising thing that you encountered during the first semester?
