Honest review of EKU PMHNP??

Updated:   Published

I am at a very critical crossroad professionally and have to decide in the next couple weeks if I will choose to graduate and go on to EKU PMHNP post-graduate program OR stay at my current university and plow through their FNP program. Since either PMHNP or a specific specialty within primary practice are both of HUGE interest, I'm truly not exactly dead set about either direction!

I have read everything that I can about EKU on these forums. Most of what I can find sounds good, however I came across a post from somebody called 'PMHNP16' who basically said she was in the program and that a large group of their class was failing, and that the program actually has a pretty low attrition rate towards graduation.

Can anybody help me out, and give me your very real, honest, clear opinions of this program? How does testing from home work- do you use webcam?? are faculty easy to find and get ahold of, is what this other person posted accurate or not??

I appreciate any input to help my final decision.

I found a current Facebook page for PMHNP at EKU. From what I observed the program is decent. Have you received an acceptance letter? I applied June 10 and haven’t heard anything. Does anybody know how long it takes to receive a letter or acceptance/denial?

Hi Rnmoo,

I got my acceptance letter a couple of weeks ago. Have you heard yet?

Hi. I did get an acceptance letter. I am now torn between this program and NKU. I have heard EKU is extremely picky about clinical hours where you might be there for 8 hours yet can only count 1/2 hour with each patient regardless if you spend an hour with one. NKU is offering a tuition discount as well because the program is newer. They seem to be less picky with hours and only require 500 vs EKU at over 700.

I got accepted to EKU and am super excited. All online and I will just deal with the clinical hours. I think the more the better as this program is super competitive and the more hours one does the more they can show their accomplishments to prospective employers.

I’m in EKUs FNP program now and have 2 semesters left. Yes the clinical hours are tough, but I am working full time still and it’s doable. I have nothing but good things to say about the FNP program so far. Actually we were grouped with the PMHNP students through a lot of the didactic material the first year and a half. EKU is very picky about hours but as long as you’re not counting lunch breaks and logging of patient encounters into the tracking system then you are fine. We are allowed to count hours such as preparing to see the patient, coming up with diffs, reviewing labs, formulating plans, and discussing the patient with the preceptor as hours. Any breaks or downtime are not allowed to be counted. In my rotations so far I’ve had very little downtime so hours haven’t been too hard to come by.

I'm working on my PHMNP application to EKU for summer session start. I was wondering how big each cohort is? Is the program highly selective?

For nurses that DID NOT get accepted into EKU...do you know why? Are they highly selective? I’m just surprised I was rejected and not really given a reason.

Hello, does anyone here have any experience with EKU's PMHNP program now? Any info will b egreatly appreciated!

I graduated from the EKU program in June 2022.  My experience with the program was as good as could have been reasonably expected considering a fully online format, which naturally necessitates more independent learning than would be required in an in–person program.  The faculty was extremely "approachable" (at least as approachable as you can be electronically) and responsive to any emails; many also provided personal cell phone numbers in case of urgent requests.  Upon graduation, I landed my dream job in a specialty clinic treating pediatric patients and I 100% feel that EKU adequately prepared me for this position.  Ultimately, you will get out of it what you put into it.

Wow, thank you for that! I noticed their degree is "rural" for both the family NP and psych, can you explain any of the differences between "rural" and the general PMHNP degree? And I'm so happy to hear you found a great job, that's so encouraging to hear!
