Can properly made homemade NSS be use to clean inline suction catheter for patients with a trach and a vent? or be used in a nebulizer for same patients? It is too expensive to purchase and with some home patients insurance doesnt always cover it.

I've used homemade Normal Saline Solution-NSS (prepared fresh every 24hrs) for cleaning suction catheters + trach care for my home care patients or for wound care without problems. Homemade saline for trach nebulizer treatments not recommended due to chance bacterial contamination. Best to use distilled water and non-ionized salt to make homemade solution.

It's amazing stuff you learn in 30 years of homecare, especially ways to stretch medical resources and improvise! Home care = clean non-sterile.
I've also made+ instructed homecare patients How to Make Dakins using household bleach and Acetic Acid with white vingear. Some doctors continue to use these however no longer recommended:Acetic Acid and Dakin's Solution: Are They Proper Wound Care Today?
