Home Health vs Facility as a CNA?

Published

Hello, I have been a home health CNA for 7 months now. It's had its ups and downs but with my most recent client, the household hazards just were not very well worth my time or safety. Recently I have been considering either moving to a different HH agency (my current one isn't very good) or working at a facility. I know it varies from agency to facility, but in your experience, which is a better place to work in as a CNA?

Thanks!

Home health is VERY different than LTC or a hospital.

Each setting has it's good points and not so good points. It really depends on your personality. I love working in a nursing home and did not like working in home care at all. I know others who have tried LTC and just couldn't keep up with the pace and didn't like it at all for many reasons.

If you are the kind of person who likes to be constantly moving, can plan and organize your time and be willing to help other CNA's without getting stressed out and overwhelmed, then you will do great in a LTC facility. There are good nursing homes and there are terrible ones...and no matter how much you may like the fast pace, some nursing homes are very difficult to work in because of the lack of team work or the lack of support from management...or both.

I think it super duper varies from person to person.

I preferred working in home care because it was nice to be able to have time to get to know the person I was taking care of. I missed the fast pace of working in LTC but seeing some of the negligence made my heart hurt quite a bit, so that was tough. (CNAs leaving dirty briefs on the bedside table of immobile patients was what ultimately made me leave)

However I think at a good LTC facility it's possible to love your job! Just get ready to see a high turnover rate in CNAs, resulting in a constantly understaffed/undertrained facility. So it's stressful!

The pay was better for me in home care, but there was no overtime option.
