Home Health Aide Question

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm looking into working as a home health aide and it says 1 year of experience is required. I'm not in nursing school and I'm not a CNA, but I do have my EMT certification. My question is, do home health aide companies consider applicants that aren't in nursing school and have no background as a home health aide, but have another type of health care certification?

Contact one and ask. It might help if you obtained a HHA certificate.

I'm not sure what area you live in, but I am currently a HHA. I can tell you I didn't have my HHA licence or CNA but the company had me take some tests, do some skills checkoffs, and I was able to get my HHA. They also did my PPD, and CPR. The only thing I had to pay for was my physical. So I would think the option is out there. Most home health compaines are short handed and could use anyone. Please don't go into the HHA field thinking there is no skill needed and every patient is this cute older person who just needs some help. Every company isn't that way some companies take care of very skilled patients. Good Luck and Enjoy.....this job made me realize how much I enjoy what I do and in Aug I am starting my generals so I can apply to the nursing program in my area.

I just realized I said they could use anyone it isn't like that, but I think you understand what I meant.

In some states (like mine), you need to be a CNA to be a HHA. It seems like you know your state's policies already, but I just wanted to throw that out there just in case. (: At any rate, it depends on the agency if they really want you to have one year exp. that badly or not. Most of them prefer it, but it's certainly not required. It's a rewarding job! Your EMT exp. may serve you well in the application process, but you'll never know until you try. Good luck!
