Holiday pay, shift differentials???

I am really confused lately. Our hospital is not night shift friendly at all and I just wanted to run a few things by you and see what your opinion and response would be to these:

1. If we work Friday night, 12 hour shift, 7p-7a, we get only the night shift differential, which is only $1.00. The seven hours that we actually work into Saturday is NOT counted as a weekend, and therefore, no weekend differential. Friday night is NOT considered a weekend. Even though I work 7 hours into Saturday and have to sleep for a few hours, that is considered my weekend off!!! Don't you think we should at least get the weekend differential?

2. Nights differential is $1.00 during the week. Well, on the weekend, the DAY shift gets a $0.50 increase in pay while the NIGHT shift only gets $1.25. That is only a 25 cent weekend diff while the dayshift gets 50 cents? That isn't right, is it?

3. If we are on call and get called in, we get paid at time and a half. Which is fair. BUT, if we are on call, on a holiday and get called in we STILL only get paid time and a half? So there is no incentive for taking call on a holiday. you get nothing more in pay than any other day of the week. So anyone "trapped" into taking call during a holiday has a hard time finding someone to trade with!

4. Okay, my last gripe! for now! This is Labor day. I work tonite from 7p to 7 a. BUT, I only get 4 hours of holiday pay. After 11pm, it is considered no longer a holiday! So, my pay rate goes back down to my normal pay with shift differential!!! This makes no sense to me! I think that if you punch in on a holiday, you should get paid holiday pay until you punch out!!! That goes back to the weekend differential NOT being paid for Saturday morning! If they consider Friday night NOT ending until Saturday at 7 a.m., then why not consider Labor day NOT ending until Tuesday at 7 a.m. Does this make sense? It may sound confusing but I feel completely cheated in many many ways.

If you have time, let me know what you think!!!! I know this was long but I appreciat your taking the time to read!!!

:)

On the weekend question, your shift is considered when you start--because when you go back to work on monday, you don't have to go in until monday is almost over.---on the holiday pay....you're correct. 8>)

Our weekend nights are Friday and Saturday, so we are paid differential for the entire shift both nights. Sunday night is not considered to be a weekend night.

On holidays, we receive differential for the entire night before the holiday. The only one that we are paid "night of" is July 4th.

I'm not surprised that you won't get paid for the entire shift of Labor Day, do you get paid from 2300 if you worked Sunday night?

I think we get 10% for nights, 15% for weekends, and 20% for holidays. Only licenced staff get diffs.

I think they are right on the holiday pay.. though it would shift over to normal pay at 12am. But if you were working sunday night (labour day morning) then you should get holiday pay. It sounds like the noc guys are getting shafted at your hospital :(
