I was wondering if anyone in here has worked in any of the British prisons, and if so what its like. I'm also curious how open they are to hiring nurses from other countries.

Hi. I have only worked a few shifts in private prisons in the UK for an agency. The facilities were excellent and nurses were well supported. There were never any prisoners in the hospital bays - the work involved administering medication, Hep B injections for new arrivals, sitting in with Drs. and assessing patients who had requested to see the Dr. Where I live they frequently advertise for prison nurses in the Govt sector. I work with alot of overseas nurses (in hospital) who are brilliant and have alot to offer so am sure they would welcome you providing you have a thorough personal history check. Good Luck. Heather.

I have a friend who has worked in a prison setting and she loved it. Her work involved giving meds and sitting in with Doctors. She was never in a wing and was escorted by a guard most of the time. Giving out meds she had 2 guards by her side.
Its not for everyone, good luck.

Phil as prison nursing is not on the shortage occupation list you would be unlikely to get a work Visa to allow you to get a job.
You would need to register with the NMC (nursing and midwifery council)
It's worth checking out some of the threads in the international forum about overseas nurses who want to work in the UK
