History/global perspective of emergency nursing?

heck, I remember when we did not have emergency rooms! Hospitals used them for marketing to get people to come to their hospital. I remember when the visit was FREE, just to get you in the door. This was in the 1960's. So you should not have to go back very far.

However, think about combat. That is where many nurses were first employed, before hospitals were invented.

Thanks, I was thinking of using something about Clara Barton/Florence Nightengale..I guess the idea of triage etc. I am in my last semester of school and just did my ED rotation (this is where I want to work:)), and we have to write multiple papers on the subject. Thanks for your help.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading that it was actually the knights templar, the hospitalers. Those were the knights who treated their comrades in arms. That search should get you some good information. Check your fundamentals book. Mine has a paragraph or so about it I think.

Emergency medicine as a specialty is relatively new, only recognized as such since 1979.

Use your school library's database searches to do a journal search on origins of emergency nursing, origins of triage principles, evolution of trauma care, etc.

Hint: trauma care as we practice it today comes largely from combat medicine experiences in the Korean & Vietnam wars.

Thanks Guys,

I ended up using my library database to look up journal articles (Duh! I have to remember that the worlds answers are not solely found on google). I ended up finding a great article on trauma protocol development/teamwork communication, and it fit perfectly into my paper!
