which ones?

I have heard that Northside and Piedmont are having hiring freezes. Wellstar Kennestone still seems to be hiring.....at least some of my new grad friends are getting jobs there.

I know Piedmont only hired 18 new graduate nurses hospital wide for their residency programs for grads in December. However, since you have nursing experience, you may find it easier to find a job in Atlanta. I think many hospitals in the Atlanta area still need experienced nurses, but they are cutting way back on the number of new grads they hire because of the high cost of training them.

I have some inside information that there is a glut of experienced nurses in the Atlanta area. However many hospitals are still having career fairs and appear to be colllecting resumes for a rainy day. Everytime there is a slow down in the economy there is always an influx of nurses back into the market place. Slow down in elective admissions compounds the problem as hospital administrators look to cut back on salary expense. This is a temporary problem and will probably resolve itself by mid summer when those nurses that were going to leave their positions do so. Apply for jobs everywhere and if you are experienced you will get a job. If you have been out of nursing for more than 3 years forget about it, you will not even get a phone call. Good luck.

thanks so much for the info!

First, let me be very clear, I am not an expert on the subject of the status of Nurse Recruitment and Retention in Atlanta GA. However, I was the Manager of Centralized Staffing for a large and prestigious health care system in Philadelphia before coming to Atlanta. I am a RN with a BBA and a MBA. I am now going to get my BSN and MSN. I am seriously contemplating doing my thesis on Nurse Recruitment and Retention since my MSN will be in Administration. I have found the Atlanta market to be fascinating!

My information is gathered after a fifty-six day search. I have been away from bedside nursing for years and have found myself unemployable without the nurse refresher program. Hopefully that will solve my unemployment issues and let me get back to work and to school.

Now to answer your question about new graduates finding positions. I have visited most of the hospitals or applied online. Most all of them use some form of automated application system. The most complicated is those that use PeopleSoft. The easiest is a simple web form where you enter your name and copy your resume. Most of the hospitals do not reply to an application which is very interesting. What happens to the applications is a mystery. Some of the hospitals will respond if you call them and ask. Some will not. So the sample size is small for gathering intelligence. A long way of saying to you don't let anything I tell you stop you from applying at any hospital, you will not know until you apply.

From those that did talk to me I got the impression that they are indeed hiring new grads. In fact, I got the distinct impression that the hospitals had budgeted last year for the new graduates and were holding positions for them. Makes sense because even with the high start up costs the new grad is less expensive than a seasoned nurse. With the economy the way it is hospital administrators will be looking at its most expensive cost very close and will direct to save where they can, and people cost is the easiest one to manipulate. I have seen other comments on here that says new grads are being turned away but I have not found any solid evidence to support those claims.

My general conclusion is that Atlanta is a well RN populated area and with the negative downturn in the economy hospitals are enjoying a temporary respite in the shortage. I think the respite is going to be short and end abruptly. Then things will return to normal.

Apply for jobs everywhere you want to work. I am positive with the right attitude you will find a hospital that will hire you. Good luck!

Maybe we should start a thread titled Jobs Availabilty in Atlanta? Lots of folks are looking for work and it always helps to have somone on the inside to tell who is hiring and who is not. Anyone know how to start such a thread?
