High School student interested in becoming a nurse..

Published

A little information about me:

I am a junior in high school and I LOVE the health care field. I have several health problems, including Pseudotumor Cerebri and recently "lived" in a hospital for 2 months undergoing 4 surgeries. I LOVED the hospital. Talking with the doctors, nurses, PA's, NP's, excited me. I love Biology in school, the human body and watch every medical show out there.

With the guidance counselors calling us in their offices, they are reminding us to start looking for colleges and thinking about what we want to do in life.

After A LOT of thought, I think being a nurse would be perfect for me. BUT, I'm scared out of my mind. Hearing about how hard school is, it's really freaking me. I get good grades, maybe not amazing but A's and B's float my boat. I do work hard and give it my all but is that sometimes not enough in nursing school?

Any advice is very appreciated!

GO FOR IT! We need your fresh energy in the field. I knew at 9 years old I wanted to be a nurse. I made that dream a reality 10 years aga and I love it now more than ever. I can't imagine doing any thing else.

Call your local community college and ask if they have a CNA (certified nursing assistant) program this summer. If they do, you should take advantage of it. If you sign on with a hospital or (more likely) nursing home, your employer may even pay for it.

I am not a nurse but know several people who have pursued this route. I'm a pharmacist, and believe me, I got a job in a pharmacy even before I went back to school at age 23, so I would know if this was really what I wanted to do. And it was, but I have known many people who never worked in the field (or other fields) until graduation and knew immediately that this wasn't for them. Don't make that mistake!

Was your pseudotumor cerebri from taking Accutane? That's the most common cause in a person your age, and Accutane (isotretinoin) is some scary stuff but is a miracle drug when used appropriately.

If you become a nurse (or any other health care worker), you can get a job anywhere. Not many people can say that.
