High School Student to >> CNA?

Published

Hello, I'm currently about to enter my second semester as Senior in High School,

What I have: Hope Scholarship (Covers 4 Year Tuition) 100$ towards books.

Goals: To become a RN > Possibly Nurse Practitioner.

Should I go to LPN or CNA or straight for my RN? I'd be using CNA and/or LPN as a stepping stone for experience.

What do you guys think would be beneficial for me?

BTW, I'm 10 minutes from a college that is pre-nursing accreddited and is currently waiting approval on there nursing program in the next two years.

Thanks!!!!

My opinion:

I would go for a 4 year program (BSN). In the summer, after you finish high school, take a CNA class at your local community college (you probably will have to sign up now for it). Then you have something you can work at in the summers etc. and get some healthcare experience.

Do not attend a college that is "pre-accredited". There is no such thing. They may have applied and are in the process but there are NO guarantees that ANY school will get accredited. We had one of those here and people went because there was no waiting list etc. Many of them had difficulty getting employment on graduation.

A BSN will give you more employment options.

Great that you have a 4 yr scholarship. The $100 for books won't be enough. So you might want to apply for other scholarships (there are many for nursing students). Not all of them are needs based so your initial scholarship shouldn't affect them.

For the record I am in an ADN program (2 yr to RN), but I am definitely going for a BSN. I am not having someone put a roadblock up because I lack 2 years of education. Plus I want to go into advanced practice
