My name is Tara. I am not a nursing student yet since I never set foot in a college until recently shen I started taking pre-reqs. I am 39 years old now so this is sort of like culture shock to me.
If you are going to a community college for your ADN/ASN I was wondering how your school works.
1. Once you finished your pre-reqs do you have to stay with the class that you start your nursing program with? Meaning can you take 1 nursing class per semester?
2. When did you apply for the nursing program and how long was it before you knew you'd been accepted?
3. How hard is the math that is associated with the program?
4. Do you know anyone who took longer than 3 years at a community college?
Sometimes I read posts and I get really scared that I can't do this is that it'll be very tough for me, being married with a small toddler and all. I need some encouragement.
Anyway, thanks for the time!

Don't know really...
I applied in September, and found out on May 6th...talk about a wait!
The math is very simple, you can google "Nursing math" or even search it through this site and get examples.
No, and i have a friend who is a mother, who is amazing, and she made it through her adn program.

1. Once you finished your pre-reqs do you have to stay with the class that you start your nursing program with? Meaning can you take 1 nursing class per semester? You start out as one group and often lose a few along the way. Sometimes if a person failed out in years previous, they will join in mid program. but for the most part you are the same group from start date till graduation.
2. When did you apply for the nursing program and how long was it before you knew you'd been accepted? I applied in October and was accepted in June.
3. How hard is the math that is associated with the program? I haven't exactly started yet. ;-) if you have a good understanding of basic math you should be ok. especially if you have to do all your pre reqs there will most likely be a math class involved to get you up to date. The only new concept from back in the day, ;-) in dimensional analysis. which really isn't that bad if you have the math down. And yes there are some great math threads here.
4. Do you know anyone who took longer than 3 years at a community college? Yes, but only because I took all my pre reqs very part time. night classes till last semester. Also others who didn't pull the grades who had to re take pre req classes to be able to apply for the program. at our school, A&P 1 is only taught in the fall and A&P 2, only in the winter. If you don't make the grade you have to wait an entire year to retake the class.

Once I was in the program, we started the first semester with one technical "class"....but that class had 3 hrs of lecture- 2 days a week, 4 hrs of skills lab/clinicals-on the clinical day, and then a "legal issues" class 1 hr 1 day a week....so it was actually 2-3 classes....
2. When did you apply for the nursing program and how long was it before you knew you'd been accepted? i applied at a deadline (january before the semester) and knew in 2 months
It depends, it takes time to learn it, but you CAN do it...you just have to learn the tricks.
