hesitations of becoming a nurse...ever had any????

Published

Hi guys,

I'm new and I want to be a Nurse. My only hesitation is that I tend to change my career choices and I hate it. I would love to stick to one thing that I enjoy. I've only studied business and I'm 25 years old. How old is everyone around here? Is it too late to start over?? I love helping people and I hate desk jobs. I know I would love being a Nurse. After reading a few posts, everyone says a nurses job is a respectable profession yet I hear a lot of negative things in terms of work. The hours. etc. How fast can you advance. I would want to be in L&D or Cardiac.

What I hear a lot if that there is a lot of butt wiping and dirty work. Or is that only in one area. Say if you specialize in L&D and work with babies (I LOVE BABIES) do you still get sent around doing other work?

What is the salary for a L&D nurse? Usual hours?

Will it be hard for someone with no previous science background, except a first year university biology course!!

Thanks... all help adn advice appreciated!!

Where in Canada do live?

Hey - I'm a cube rat, too! And I HATE it.

Can't WAIT to go back to school and get this show on the road!

Posting to you live from the carpeted walls of my cube! 31 days left in the financial world, and counting!!!

Ok so you are in Toronto..just to let you know that if you are willing to go to school in Kitchener then you could get into the BSN program (your degree would be from McMaster). You only need to have some credits from university (I'm not sure how many exactly) with a B average. They don't require any specific courses. You may want to Check Conestoga college or Mohawk college ( I think that's in London and offers the exact same program thre Mcmaster). These programs are still open for this coming fall. I am not sure if this helps you out at all but I thought I'd share that with you.

Then I'd say nursing is the perfect career field for you!!! There's such a wide variety of specialties from which to choose, and if you decide one specialty is not for you, it's relatively easy to switch to something else. Nursing does not have to be all cleaning up poop (and various other bodily fluids) you could go into public health or administration, though, most nurses start their careers (and I think it's a good idea to do this) by "working the floor" at a hospital for a year or two.
