Hey I will be taking the HESI pretty soon here, I will be taking the math, reading comp, vocabulary, grammar, and A&P sections. I was wondering how the questions were formatted. Multiple choice, matching, short answer, etc.
Thanks!

Hi, mysonsmama! I'm fresh from taking the HESI this morning, so hopefully I can be of some help to you.
For the sections you listed, all of the questions are multiple choice with the exception of math. While the math section is mostly multiple choice, there are a few questions where you are required to input a numerical answer into a blank.
Hope that helps!

Hope was your exceptation overall with the exam? Was it hard? Did you feel that the Evovle study guide prepare you? Thanks.
Thanks for the reply. Did you use the evolve book to study? If so, how well prepared for the sections I listed did you feel? Was there a ton of conversions for the math? (gal:quart:pint:cup:oz:mL/etc)
Uhh excuse the stupid smileys haha apparently I put in just the right combo of symbols accidentally
Overall, the exam was a lot easier than I expected. The Evolve Study Guide definitely helped, especially for the Math, Vocab, and Reading Comprehension sections. I remember quite a few words in the Vocab section on the HESI came directly from the Study Guide. The Study Guide also gives you really good exposure to the Reading Comprehension Section format.
That being said, the Study Guide leaves much to be desired when it comes to the Science sections. The practice questions in the book are misleadingly easy. I purchased McGraw-Hill's Nursing School Entrance Exams book for a more in-depth overview of Anatomy & Physiology and Biology. Still, these were my 2 lowest-scoring sections, mostly because I haven't taken Anatomy & Physiology II yet.
Yes, I used the Evolve book. I thought it prepared me very well for the Math, Vocab, Grammar, and Reading Comprehension sections. Quite a few of the vocab words on the HESI came directly from the book, and the Reading Comprehension practice questions were good exposure to the actual format for that section. The Math section of the book prepared me pretty well overall, but I did a ton of conversion problems on my own just in case!
The Evolve book doesn't really do a stellar job with the Science sections, however. If your school requires Anatomy & Physiology or Biology, I strongly recommend buying McGraw-Hill's Nursing School Entrance Exams book to brush up and get some good practice in. They also have excellent math practice problems that are a bit harder than the actual HESI, but if you can handle them, you can definitely take on the Math section of the HESI. I have been awful at math my entire life, so I practiced the Math section problems a lot! With the help of the Evolve book and McGraw-Hill, I made a 98 on the Math section! I was shocked and thrilled.
As far as the Math questions themselves, be prepared for a lot of ratio problems like x:3::4:5 (solve for x). There are a few conversions, mainly volume-related. I also remember using 1 kg = 2.2 lbs and 1 in = 2.54 cm, so get familiar with some of the English/Metric conversions. Other than that, it was mostly word problems calculating change and sales tax, and a few percentages.
Thank you for sharing this information! Best of luck.
