HESI A2 help desperately needed for A&P section

Nursing Students HESI

Published

I am trying to get into an ADN program or a BSN program for Fall 2018, but I cannot for the life of me get a higher grade in the A&P section of the HESI A2. I went through all of the A&P questions on the Pocket Prep App until it said I was 100% ready. I've tried many Quizlet sets. I've watched some but not all of the Crash Course Anatomy Videos. No matter what I do I can't seem to make the 75. And the program I'd really like to get into requires an 80. Every other subject I do great in without even having to study.

Last year in May I took the test and my results were:

Math 82

Grammar 88

A&P 72

Reading 90

Vocal 98

Critical Thinking 850

March 2nd I tried again only to get:

Math 80

Grammar 94

A&P 68

Reading 94

Vocal 96

Critical Thinking 830

Any advice would be appreciated. I have until April to get my score up higher.

Well, I do hope a couple more people will give you more advice from their perspectives. Here is mine:

I barely studied for the A&P myself. For some reason I was confident I would do well. I knew there would be 30 questions, which means, to make a minimum passing grade I would have to answer pretty much every question correct - there was no room for a single error. I got in, as soon as I clicked first question, I realized I should have studied! By the time I submitted the test I was nearly as confident as I was before. In fact, I felt like my future of becoming a nurse was slowly slipping away. Until I saw my score of 92! I felt so relieved!

My point is, yes, study as hard as you can! And you said you did! I do believe that confidence is important when taking any exam. Also, always trust your gut, because I did, even when I was not sure of a question and answer I selected. What I think helped is applying the knowledge you have to situations that seem you did not study for, but are similar. In other words, if you know the rule for classification of cancers, you still can correctly answer questions about cancers of, let's say, GI tract. Ultimately, if nothing seems to work, do an educated guess.

Good luck!

Have you taken A&P yet?

In Jan. I took the HESI Cold. I had just decided over Christmas to pursue nursing but had not taken A&P since 2001. I got a 76 on that section, which is passing for my program by 1 point. I found many of the questions easy, i.e. "Which Proximal/Distal statement is correct." "What is the largest bone in the lower limb." I actually learned many of the questions that tripped me up in my 8-wk A&P I That I just finished. I was confident I would raise my score by 10-15 pts.

I took the HESI for real this week. I only read over the systems I hadn't focused on during A&P I this mini-semester, in the prep-book. I got in to the HESI and... I thought for sure I failed. With every question I saw my fall-start slip away. They were beyond challenging. There were no easy questions. It focused mainly on the depths of A&P II topics. I almost cried. But I took my time. I spent more time on A&P than I did on reading. I slowly read every question (colored by panic). I prayed on a few. I evaluated all the options and talked myself through them all. I made a lot of half-educated guesses, or guesses on what logic I could imagine.

I got an 88.

I was floored... and then almost cried again because I had passed. I don't know if there is truly any best way to prepare for the HESI. I did do some preparing over the last 8-weeks on exam taking which may have helped. I have also heard some students say that the more the prepared for A&P the worse they did... I personally just think it matters which version you get. My second HESI was much more difficult than the first. Even the Math section was more difficult and was nearly 50% fill in the answer. There was a lot of praying in that section too, ;-).

How many HESI re-take attempts is your school allowing? If it is more then two then definitely pick up A&P book and read over the systems.

I would look at the questions you are missing on the A&P section then figure out what system(s) you are struggling in. For example, I'm strong in the circulatory system and the skeletal system but not very strong in the nervous system. I looked at videos on both youtube and khan academy on the systems I was weak at and took their tests and quizzes. I would then make flashcards on those parts I don't know in a "fill in the blank" format. Just take it in small chunks and you'll get it!

Mnemonics are key!! PMAT. Mitosis happens everywhere even in my toes. I have a blast making things with osteoblasts. etc. etc.

I was taking A&P 2 when i was studying for the HESI so that really helped a lot. I know you said you watched the crash course videos on youtube but did you take notes? I watched all of the ones i felt i needed to refresh my memory on and also took notes. I made my self a pamphlet and studied that over and over. I also used my anatomy book to go over special parts of the body like ears and the eyes. Good Luck!

I see you did very good both times on your grammar section, any pointers you can give? I'm having trouble and I notice there is a lot of which word is not used correctly or which sentence is grammatically correct
