hi guys i recently just got accepted into herzinbg college lpn program for their january through december 2011 term. i got tired of waiting to get accepted into jeff states or lawson, or wallaces program and even though i had the grtades to hbe successfully accepted into wallaces or bevills or even lawsons and jeff states program in the summer or fall, i just figured herzing was quicker. can i get a opinion. someone who is already in the programs opinion would be great! but im open to all views:-)
My daughter and I have an appointment January 4 at Herzing. She has completed all pre-reqs and received her LPN license at CACC and worked her 500 hours. She did not make the cut to get back in CACC for the mobility to RN although she had 3.2 gpa and all A's and B's. The points system at Jeff State, CACC, and Southern Union is really tough with limited availability. We have spoken with Herzing and they seem very nice. I have heard that although they are accredited they do not have a good program or good chances of passing the NCLEX. Any advice? She only has the last 4 nursing classes to take I think 201, 202, 203, and 204. Wondering how much it might cost. Really nervous but hopeful. Also, where do they do their clinicals? HELP
My daughter has taken all classes at CACC. She only lacks the final four nursing classes 201, 202, 203, and 204. She did not get accepted back at CACC and is looking to do the Mobility to RN at Herzing. When you say nobody will accept Herzing classes, will that affect her since she has had all Basics at CACC? You sound knowledgable and we are skeptical as well. Tough to get in and also do you know about how much these four classes will cost?
I am not sure about clinicals, but, unless I am mistaken they do not allow any student to bridge in, except their own LPN's. They require you to go through their entire RN program at a cost of approx $22,000. I called them once and had to get hafeful with them over the phone before they would tell me what the cost would be. I told them I was not going to drive all the way down there if they were not willing to meet me part of the way, by telling what I wanted to know over the phone.
I have heard their NCLEX-RN pass rate is not good at all. For $22,000 it would have been cheaper for me to finish my core classes and go through UAB's Nursing Program. I also had all of my core ADN classes completed. All I would have had to do was take two more semesters of acedemic classes, at a Jr. College, then the 5 semesters of nursing at UAB, then I would have a BSN, from UAB, rather than an ADN from Herzing. Then may have a very hard time getting a job to pay off all those student loans.
Herzing is considered a provate school, some of their acedemic classes will not transer to a 4 year University. I would have found it hard to swallow paying approx $500 per semester hour, then have to retake those clasess to advance on and get my BSN.
I will let you in on some information that is not made public about nursing in the Birmingham area. There is not the shortage of nurses they have in other places. This is due to the closure of Caraway. The nurses that were not able to retire were absorbed by the other hospitals. Also, with the economy like it is many of the traveling nurses are no longer traveling. They have come back home and taken jobs at local hospitals. The grads that seem to get jobs quickly are those that already work in a hospital during nursing school. Those that don't sometimes have to look for months for employment, or relocate. With so many nurses available hospitals here are able to pick and choose. If someone with experience applies, they get the job before the recent grad does. Just something to think about. I know of a posted opening at UAB Hospital that has been open for almost a month and they have not interviewed the first person yet. I personally know of two recent grads that applied for it.
IF she can get in and only have to take NUR 201-204, that is a total of 21 semester hours. So the cost will be approx $10,500, compared to approx $2300 at a Jr. College. I would recommend applying to Wallace, Bevill (Sumiton and Jasper campuses), Jeff St (Carson Rd., Hoover, and the night/weekend program).
well since were on the subject i will ask. ive heard that with me being a male, i would get hired quicker then a female, evene if i only have a adn and she has a bsn... is this true? and also, is bevill a pretty easy school to get into... i have 2 b's and a c.. and im scared thats gonna mess me up for getting in for the fall?
Sometimes a hospital will hire a male over a female, if both are equal. Since it is technically illegal they don't advertise it. It is acceptable to require a coal mine to hire women, but encouraging someone to hire males over females is a lawsuit waiting to happen. A male with an ADN, and a female with a BSN are not exactly equal. The current trend is Magnet Hospitals, which require a BSN. There is a lot of debate over ADN vs. BSN, which is better? Yes, they are both RN's, yes they both had to pass the same NCLEX for licensure. Look at it from a business point of view. No company hires people without the expectation they will have the ambition and ability to move up the career ladder. Hospitals do not want a nurse to stagnate in a job that a recent grad can do. They do not want to pay top dollar to someone doing the same thing the lowest paid nurses are able to do within a short time. They would rather have somone that can move into a management position. With everything else being equal, the person with a BSN is more prepared for that move.
so i have a question about bevill also... my grades are currently as listed:
a&p1 b
a&p2 c
micro b
bio 103 c
chemistry a
mth100 c
From what i understand with how they pick for the program, the only classes they look at really are the sciences and math, but they do look at the other classes and you are given more points if you have completed all these classes prior to the application being submitted. also on my teas test, i made a 72.7%=109.5 on other schools scales... the lady told me that they look to see if u have above a 2.5 then they send out letters inviting you to take the teas v test then they make their selection based on the lever( developing, proficient, advanced,ect..) can anyone tell me how true this is? do i stand a good chance of getting in?
