Hemodialysis questions from a confused student!

Hi all!

This is a shot in the dark but perhaps somebody on this forum could help me out.

I'm in the midst of writing a paper and I'm stuck on a particular question. The question is what is the RN's primary nursing responsibility during the actual dialysis treatment (my first thought was monitoring vs) and also is this nurse using evidence based practice (ebp)? If so, how would I go about finding out a REFERENCE that the rn is using ebp?

Any info/guidance would be appreciated!

Thanks

Mostly the techs monitor v/s during chronic out patient hemodialysis and most report abnormal results. Many deal with the abnormal results using protocols.

What an RN does in chronic outpatient hemodialysis is somewhat different that what one does in an acute situation.

Was this a general question or was it about one or the other, chronic vs acute.

HI Nephro,

It's in general. The client has ESRD.

Thanks

Yes I understand that. But acute dialysis patient are different than chronic dialysis patient and therefore require different nursing interventions.

HI Nephro,

It's a chronic dialysis patient.

Thanks

I guess I'd have to say the primary responsibilty of the RN in a chronic unit is that every patient receives an adequate, safe treatment. Usually the techs monitor v/s and respond according to protocol. Sometimes they don't know what to do and will confer with the RN.

If you are looking for evidence base practice look here

These are our guidelines. They are peer reviewed ( I believe)
