I'm a first year nursing student working on my patient prep form for clinical tomorrow. My patient's chart said: BS/FS q 6 hrs with coverage. Can anyone tell me what BS/FS means? I'm getting good at deciphering chart abbrevaistions, but this has me stumped!
Thanks,
Beth

It is an order to test blood sugar every 6 hours and cover with insulin, usually on a sliding scale. :)

BS/FS is blood sugar/fingerstick meaning check his blood sugar with a glucose meter. Hope that helps!!
Thank you both so very much!! I appeciate you speedy response.
I have a great clinical instructor who would have happily answered my question before clinical, but I enjoy having a complete clinical prep without having to ask her questions.
Thanks again!! :kiss

Always feel free to come here and ask questions anytime! At the same time however, DON'T ever be afraid to ask your clinical instructor and other nurses working on the unit, questions! That's something that you definately need to get used to doing! Some people, myself included, have that natural inborn tendency to NOT want to ask a lot of questions. But with practice, you can get good at it. I ask TOO many questions sometimes, now.
But I can't stress it enough, ask the people around you lots of questions. It will really raise their confidence in you, because it shows that you don't already think that you know it all and that you are willing to learn. :chuckle
